Course description

In this comprehensive course for professionals we will all there is to know to better understand the challenges and joys faced by gender-diverse people. We put you at the forefront, helping you understand the role that gender plays in all our lives, confronting preconceptions, and unearthing your strengths to integrate transgender and non-binary people. We also amplify authentic voices by sharing recorded narratives from transgender and non-binary individuals, illuminating the lived experiences of those we aim to support.

The Curriculum

Our comprehensive curriculum spans roughly three hours and comprises six engaging modules:

  1. Foundations of Gender:
    In this module we will address the differences between sex and gender, we will consider what is gender-diversity, and we will define common clinical pathways to accessing gender-affirming healthcare.
  2. Understanding Gender Norms:
    In this module we will learn where masculine and feminine gender norms come from and how they are communicated and policed within our culture.
  3. Sexuality Beyond Labels:
    In this module we will delve into the historical conceptualisation and medicalisation of sexual attraction, defining core concepts such as sex, pleasure, and sexual orientations.
  4. The History of Trans:
    In this module we will guide you through the presence of gender diversity across time and culture and how the socio-political context we live in impacts the public image of trans and non-binary people. 
  5. In Their Own Words:
    In this module we will interview community members asking them to, in their own words, describe what challenges and joys trans and non-binary people face. We will address questions like ‘What does it feel like to be misgendered?’.
  6. Your Role:
    In this module we will encourage self-reflection about our own gender identity, we will equip you with practical language skills to address gender diverse individuals, and we will consider ways of creating accepting environments where everyone can be their authentic selves.

Who the course aimed at

  • This course is designed to equip professionals with a deeper understanding of the challenges and joys faced by gender-diverse people to create welcoming and compassionate environments.
  • We have designed our materials to cater to neurodiverse individuals by incorporating a variety of learning modalities, minimising the word count per slide, employing a sans-serif font to aid readability for individuals with Dyslexia.
  • We strive to make our courses accessible to all, using clear and inclusive language. So, even if you are not a professional but, but perhaps a friend, family member or partner of trans person who has an interest in understanding more about the experiences of trans and non-binary individuals, we warmly welcome you to join us.
