Course description

In this comprehensive course for clinicians we will summarise evidence-based best practices for working with transgender and non-binary people. We put clinicians at the forefront, helping them unearth their strengths, confront preconceptions, and develop a reflective practice. We also amplify authentic voices by sharing recorded narratives from transgender and non-binary individuals, illuminating the lived experiences of those we aim to serve.

The Curriculum

  1. Foundations of Gender:
In this module we will address the differences between sex and gender, we will learn about gender-diversity, and we will define common clinical pathways to accessing gender-affirming healthcare.
  2. Understanding Gender Norms:
In this module we will learn where masculine and feminine gender norms come from and how they are communicated and policed within our culture.
  3. Sexuality Beyond Labels:
In this module we will delve into the historical conceptualisation and medicalisation of sexual attraction, defining core concepts such as sex, pleasure, and sexual orientations.
  4. The History of Trans:
In this module we will guide you through the presence of gender diversity across time and culture, as well as the origins of transgender health, and how the socio-political context we live in impacts its access.
  5. In Their Own Words:
In this module we will interview community members asking them to, in their own words, describe what challenges and joys they face as trans and non-binary people. We will address questions like ‘What is it like to be misgendered? Or In what ways accessing surgery changed your life?’.
  6. The Clinician’s Role:
In this module we will encourage self-reflection on power dynamics, equipping clinicians with practical language skills to address gender diverse clients, and we will consider best clinical practices using real-life case scenarios.
